Why are you in this industry/occupation?

I have a finance degree so my skills are easily transferable. I worked in a number of industries ranging from Mining to Beauty but the Telecommunications industry really fascinated me. . I love technology and the ever changing environment of the industry.
Currently I work for a telecommunications company and I really enjoy working here.

What are the benefits?

Most importantly I work with people who are not afraid of change. It is a huge difference compared to other industries that I worked for where too often the attitude from senior managers was something like “we have been doing it for 30 years this way, we are not going to change anything”. Tech industry, in contrary, is on top of the game. The industry changes very fast and also attracts lots of smart people who are able to keep the pace and who are very agile. Because of that the systems are faster, the processes are better. This is a big advantage because I know that what I do adds value.

What are the drawbacks?

Of course the lack of women. Unfortunately where I work the company doesn’t have many senior women who could become my role models or mentors. We also don’t have any women on the board.

Why do you encourage other women and girls to consider this industry/occupation?

Tech industry is not reserved for men. We need to change the direction of the industry by recruiting more women. Women are equally advanced in the adoption of the latest technology. We should contribute to the growth of the industry not only through consumption by also through creation, otherwise our needs will be overlooked. Finally we need to be there for other women to support each other. Amazing things happen when women help other women.
